이민 개혁에 대한 정치권의 특히 오바마의 설레발은 4년 전으로 돌아간다. 부시 정권 8년간을 아쉬워했던 이민자들은 민주당 오바마 대통령 후보에 열광했다. 젊은이들은 흑인의 젊은 엘리트가 분명히 정치권의 개혁을 가져올 것이라고 굳게 믿었으며 전폭적인 지지를 보냈다. 마치 오바마가 메시아인 것처럼 기대에 부풀었다. 오바마 역시 이민개혁의 필요성을 주장하면서 화답했다. 그리고 당선됐다.
하지만 기대했던 이민개혁과 이민자의 권리는 의료개혁을 위한 희생물에 불과했다. 그뿐만이 아니었다. 뒤통수를 제대로 갈겼
